Anne! Somehow I missed this amidst the holiday, but thank you for being in touch--I'm so glad it resonated. And yes, the beet and the carrot salads were INSANE. Maybe this means one has to go eat them every four months?!
So interesting! I often bristle at the implication that individuals should be solving what are systemic problems, but I hadn't thought of it so much in terms of relationships/marriage. Our country has a sad lack of community; maybe if we had a stronger sense of community we'd be more open, as a nation, to socialist things like universal health care. For sure, we'd all be happier. There's too much pressure for a romantic partner to satisfy all our needs. I'm happily married and stay home far too much (I've been working from home since 2017), but I long for more community. If we didn't live in the expensive Bay Area we'd buy a house next to our friends, or create something like this "friends compound," which is in our neighborhood: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOEK3CeCGKJ/ (though I don't know how they afforded it)
Ah I've heard of this place! How neat. But yes, totally understand the financial burdens of it all. I think a lot about the sort of infrastructure I've been lucky to witness at a few artist residencies, where people live in their own little cabins with respect for independent space during the day, then community gatherings in shared space come night. Makes me think about the dream of smaller (private) living areas and bigger better (shared) third spaces. Also this Bay Area essay on community resonated with me, in case interesting: https://supernuclear.substack.com/p/stoop-coffee-how-a-simple-idea-transformed?r=h567&utm_source=pocket_shared&triedRedirect=true&utm_medium=email
Okay I loved this post so much. Everything about it. Also excited that you found Prime Suspect. It is a real tour de force on Helen Mirren's part. Love and hugs for the winter and beyond.
"hygge bunker" is such a great + disturbing turn of phrase!!
Sorry for infecting your brain with the image of it now too 🫠🫠🫠
I appreciate so much about this post, particularly the idea of yearning outward and your resistance to black-and-white thinking.
Also: I had the beet salad at Kasbah once years ago, and I still think about it with deep yearning approx. every 4-6 months. 😂

Yessss, I believe that’s 1000% the correct extrapolation. 😊 Happy holidays to you!

She is so no-nonsense, it is therapy for my people-pleasing brain just learning by osmosis! Hugs right back to you and your prolific novelist self <3
